A Safe Next.js Migration Without a Big Bang
How to split a framework upgrade into verifiable steps without turning the migration into a long feature freeze.

The riskiest migration plan sounds simple: “upgrade everything at once.” It combines framework, routing, data fetching, and UI changes in one diff where the source of a regression is difficult to isolate.
Separate the types of change
A safer sequence looks like this:
- Capture current behavior with tests.
- Upgrade runtime and dependencies without changing the product.
- Move one route or one data flow.
- Verify the production build and critical scenarios.
- Only then remove the old path.
Keep a way back
Every step should be small enough for an independent review and rollback. Temporary duplication can be cheaper than a migration that cannot be separated safely.
The goal is not merely to reach a new version. The goal is to keep the system manageable throughout the transition.
